This has not happened to me (and no one else has reported it) so it’s something local to you/your site.
As a longtime Joomla user you should have known not to click “Update” on Alpha, Beta or RC versions as there is (usually) no update path to final release versions.
Restore core files will not work for you and overwriting Alpha-1 files with v5.2.2 files extracted from the official download might not work (you could try it I suppose?) if the 5.3-Alpha-1 version changed the database structure on install/update.
Restore from backup will be the most reliable way to get back to where you were. Probably the quickest way, too.
